Abstract :
Traditional lift controlling system using Magnetic Stripe Reader.
A Magnetic Stripe Card is a type of card capable of storing data by modifying the magnetism of tiny iron-based magnetic particles on a band of magnetic material on the card. The magnetic stripe, sometimes called swipe card or magstripe is read by swiping past a magnetic reading head.
This project comprises of an 8051 micro controller, a 16X2 LCD and a DC geared motor. Generally the lift service is free, but in highly secured regions, only the authorized persons can only use the lift, all the authorized people will be issued a magnet card whose details are already pre-stored in the controller memory. The operation of the lift can be simulated using a DC geared motor driven by an L29#D H-Bridge IC which rotates when we give the input using a 4×4 keypad connected to the controller for input. The data entered and the lift status can be vied in the LCD interfaced with the controller. Each floor consists of a magnetic reader, however limiting to the project prototype scope we use only one reader. If we swipe an un-authorized card we cannot get access to the lift and at the same time a buzzer is made high. Please note that the entire circuit cannot be housed inside the lift in this prototype. Here we use an 8051 microcontroller with 5V DC Power supply. Serial (UART) protocol is primary concern here. The heart of this project is Magnetic Stripe Reader modem which works on serial (UART) protocol. A 16X2 LCD is connected to microcontroller through Digital I/O lines. The 4X4 keypad is connected in matrix format.
