REAL TIME ATM SYSTEM WORKING USING MAGNETIC STRIPE CARD & READER

Abstract :

Real time ATM system working model using Magnetic Stripe Card and Reader.

A Magnetic Stripe Card is a type of card capable of storing data by modifying the magnetism of tiny iron-based magnetic particles on a band of magnetic material on the card. The magnetic stripe, sometimes called swipe card or magstripe is read by swiping past a magnetic reading head.

In this project we develop a real time working ATM system model using Magnetic Stripe Card and Reader. Magnetic cards have less memory but highly reliability. These Magnetic Cards are not directly available, so we use the conventional ATM cards, shopping cards, credit cards, Sodexho cards, access cards etc.. Available with us in our daily life. Every magnetic stripe card has a fixed data stored in it. We use such data as reference for our project. This Magnetic Stripe Reader is connected to microcontroller through serial interface. Whenever we swipe the cards we will get the data stored in the card and the same data will be fed to the 16X2 LCD interfaced to the controller in which we can see the data. However we don’t have any access to modify the data in the card, we can only read the data present and to simulate the money transaction in our prototype we will be connecting a DC geared motor to the controller and make it run only when the correct password is entered. The DC geared motor is driven by a H-Bridge IC (L293D). Please not that the ATM operation shown in this project is a prototype and does not hold any change to change the data in the card. For the input we will be using a 4×4 keypad connected in matrix format.

Here we use an 8051 microcontroller with 5V DC Power supply. Serial (UART) protocol is primary concern here. The heart of this project is Magnetic Stripe Reader modem which works on serial (UART) protocol. A 16X2 LCD is connected to microcontroller through Digital I/O lines. The 4X4 keypad is connected in matrix format.
